Photo Gallery: Süleyman the Magnificent
A crescent in stone, the humpbacked bridge at Mostar spans the Neretva River in Yugoslavia's Bosnia-Herzegovina Republic. The bridge was built in 1566 on S黮eyman's orders to replace a nearby chain bridge deemed unsafe by his subjects. Being part of the empire brought its benefits: In this area alone, the Ottomans constructed 42 bridges, 18 caravansaries, 264 inns and hostels, and 10 covered markets.

Found in coral-rich seaweed reefs in the Pacific Ocean, clown triggerfish, such as this patterned juvenile in Indonesia's Tukangbesi Islands, are master predators. The fish blow streams of water at the sand to expose hiding prey, then use their powerful jaws and rows of sharp teeth to crush through hard-shelled reef creatures such as sea urchins, clams, snails, and crabs.

"A scarlet banksia blooms like fireworks in Australia's southwest. Not all biodiversity hot spots are tropical. This region's poor soils support 2,830 endemic plants—species that grow nowhere else on Earth."

"A hummingbird picks up more than nectar at a flower in Costa Rica's Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. Pinhole-size mites live in the blossom. When the plant's last florets bloom, mites wait for a bird's bill to enter, then climb on and sprint to the bird's nostril at cheetah-like speed—12 body lengths per second. The stowaways cling till they smell the familiar perfume of a new host plant, then deplane."

The gardens at South Carolina's Middleton Place were begun in 1741 and are one of the oldest formally landscaped gardens in the United States. Designed to mirror the ordered, geometrically-balanced style that was popular in Europe at the time, the gardens are now planned so that flowering plants are in bloom in each of the four seasons.

In the Tuscan countryside people start their day quite early, just before dawn, but wind down in the early afternoon for siesta. Shops reopen in late afternoon and dinner usually isn't served until 9 p.m.

Unlike its fraternal twin Minneapolis with its sleek skyscrapers, St. Paul has a lower, older, "brickier" profile and a quieter, self-effacing air, which has inspired both Mark Twain and F. Scott Fitzgerald to sing its praises.
