Cabbie Calculation, London, England, 1996
  Photograph by Annie Griffiths Belt
"Driving taxis can make your brain bigger, say researchers at University College London. Brain scans of the city’s cabdrivers show that the part of the hippocampus associated with navigational skills is larger than in the average Londoner. Why? Cabbies must master London’s maze of streets, and their calculation of routes may stimulate brain changes."

Kodiak Brown Bear, Alaska, 1992
  Photograph by George F. Mobley
On Kodiak nearly everyone fishes, including the island’s huge brown bears, which roam a renowned wildlife refuge. This subspecies—among the world’s largest bears—is unique to the Kodiak archipelago. Males may tower ten feet [three meters] and weigh 1,500 pounds [560 kilograms].

Tenju-An Temple, Kyoto, Japan, 1998
  Photograph by Sam Abell
Garden consciousness is at the center of spiritual life in Kyoto. For a thousand years the Imperial Palace was situated here. Around it grew an array of temples, subtemples, shrines, schools, and detached palaces, each with its own gardens and often, it seemed, its own garden philosophy.

 Colossal Head, Mexico, 1939
  Photograph by Richard H. Stewart
"First prize for the expedition’s shovels was this prehistoric ’Doughboy’: The Colossal Head, being measured by Matthew W. Stirling, leader of the National Geographic Society-Smithsonian Institution Expedition, is about 6 [1.8 meters] feet high and 18 [5.5 meters] feet in circumference. Carved from a single massive block of basalt, it is remarkable for its lifelike appearance entirely different from any other known American Indian sculpture. Its partly exposed ’helmet’ led the expedition to the Tres Zapotes area."

Formosa Push Car, Formosa, 1950
  Photograph by J. Baylor Roberts
"’Many people get killed on this railroad?’ ’Not so many,’ Said the pushers. Such questions elicited fatalistic replies. On the 14-mile [22.5 kilometer] round trip to Chiaopanshan, this car bearing the [article’s] author and his companions jumped the track dozens of times, but never on one of these crude log bridges across mountain ravines. Push cars are used only in remote areas; Formosa’s populous west and north are served by good steam railroad lines; the east coast line is less dependable."

Flower Trade, California, 1999
  Photograph by Sisse Brimberg
"Until the past decade cut-flower production worldwide has been carried on mostly as family business, the same farms cultivating the same flowers for generations. But Americans alone spend nearly 15 billion [U.S.] dollars a year on flowers and plants—about four times more than one generation ago—at 30,000 florists and 23,000 supermarkets. For the first time, flower trading has become a colossal global concern given to cutthroat competition and political battles. Flower buying by consumers has even come to involve faceless corporations where business is done over the internet."

Fraser Island Zen Garden, Australia, 1995
  Photograph by Sam Abell
"My Australian friend Kerry Trapnell and I called this secluded, silent place on Fraser Island the ’Zen Garden’ because of its almost empty, austere beauty.

"We camped here several days trying to render, photographically, the power of the place. That power was in the skeletal trees, remnants of an ancient forest that had been buried centuries ago by shifting sand dunes. Over time the sands shifted again, revealing this scene. But just behind the trees an almost vertical dune was advancing to rebury them. The trees seemed to be elemental calligraphy spelling out that story."
