Gallery: Adventure Photo Tips
During an assignment to the Cordillera Sarmiento, an unexplored mountain range at the southern tip of Chile, Gordon Wiltsie's team climbed one of the highest peaks in the region. Noticing an enticing snow spire in the distance, Wiltsie instantly realized how exciting it would look with climbers on the summit. While his companions rushed off to ascend the "Gremlin's Cap," Wiltsie prayed that the ice inside the elements of his 80-200mm zoom lens would thaw before they reached the top. In the interim, he grabbed this image with a 50mm lens, setting his friends into the grand context of the other-worldly environment.

Here a natural window gives dramatic framing to a photo. Placing a subject inside a natural frame is an effective composition technique. Canyon walls, a tent door opening, waterfall ice, or trees are other "windows" that can be used to frame a photo.

When shooting moving subjects, blur panning with a slow shutter speed can isolate the subject from the cluttered background, as well as give the subject a sense of motion. The front and back tilts of the large-format camera helps keep image sharpness from the foreground to horizon.

A colony of sea squirts forms a colorful landscape, ample hiding place for an Eastern cleaner-clingfish (Cochleoceps orientalis) in the Tasman Sea off the coast of Australia. The tiny fish, which cleans parasites from the bodies of larger fish, fights strong currents by anchoring itself with a sucker disc on its abdomen.

During an attempt to climb a new route on the southwest face of K7, the climbers were battered by a five-day storm high on the mountain. Conrad Anker, Brady Robinson and Jimmy Chin were confined to their undersize two-person portal edge several thousand feet up on the face. Due to wind and snow, their visibility had been nearly zero when they put up the portaledge. When the storm finally broke, and they could see their position, Chin crawled out of the portaledge and traversed out on a small snowfield to snap this photo.

Japanese macaques, also called snow monkeys, live farther north than any other non-human primates. Their thick coats help them survive the frigid temperatures of central Japan's highlands. But when the mercury really plummets, they go to plan B: hot-tubbing in the region's many thermal springs.

Hyenas kill them out of hunger, lions apparently out of bad habit. ... Female cheetahs deal with the threat by constantly moving, preferably before their rivals even know they're around. They coexist as phantom species, slipping into temporary vacancies between prides of lions and packs of hyenas."
