Vestmannaeyjar Bonfire, Iceland, 1998
Photograph by Sisse Brimberg
During the first weekend of August, the residents of Vestmannaeyjar celebrate Iceland's first constitution in bold Viking style—with fire, song, and plenty of drink. Democracy took root on this rocky island in 930 A.D., when the Althing, predecessor to today's parliament, first met. "Icelanders have no other king than the laws," wrote an 11th-century cleric, and the proud descendants of the country's original settlers remain fiercely independent.

Hiroshima Cemetery, Japan, 1994
Photograph by Jodi Cobb
A couple walks through a Hiroshima cemetery for victims of the world's first atom bomb attack. Detonated by the United States on August 6, 1945, the A-bomb fulfilled its promise of hastening the end of World War II when Japan surrendered nine days later. Today Hiroshima is an ultra-modern city with few battle scars, except for those in the memories of the hibakusha—bomb survivors.

Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia, 1980
Photograph by Richard Perry
Water lilies flourish in the tea-tinted bogs of Okefenokee Swamp. The swamp covers an area in southeast Georgia that is about half the size of Rhode Island. Okefenokee is an Anglicization of an American Indian word meaning "trembling earth" and describes the soft, spongy peat moss that gives an unstable feel to the swamp's drier areas.

"Symmetry in motion, two whales surface and exhale in union, emerging to the rarest of North Atlantic days—a clear sky and a glassy sea. A month from now these whales will be swimming in sync with new best friends."

Photograph by Sisse Brimberg
Cormorants recover in a Saudi pool after the first gulf war. Iraqis retreating from Kuwait damaged nearly 800 oil wells, poisoning 300 miles (483 kilometers) of coast and 600 square miles (1,554 square kilometers) of the Persian Gulf, including the breeding grounds of sea-faring cormorants and grebes. Six months after the destruction, coastlines were still black and desolate, proving that recovery would be slow for the fragile ecosystem.
