The spires of Westminster Abbey cut dramatic shapes into a blushing twilight sky. The famous London church began as a Benedictine monastery enlarged by King Edward in the 1040s. It was designated the "west minster" to distinguish it from St. Paul's Cathedral, the "east minster." For centuries, Westminster Abbey has hosted royal coronations and burials.

Poised to plunge belly-first into the ocean, a colony of gentoo penguins lines up for a dip. Thanks to their sleek bodies and strong paddle-like flippers, gentoos are the world's fastest underwater swimming birds, reaching speeds of up to 22 miles an hour (36 kilometers an hour).

When large meteorites strike Earth, as pictured above in an artist's conception, they often vaporize and change the ratio of certain chemicals in ocean water and sediments.
A new technique that analyzes these chemical clues suggests that the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago might have been less than half the size previously thought.

Containing some 600 paintings, Lascaux Cave in France's Dordogne River Valley is home to perhaps the world's most incredible array of Upper Paleolithic art. Prehistoric artists created the depictions of bulls and other animals on the cave's calcite walls more than 17,000 years ago. The cave—and its artwork—was discovered by a group of teenagers in 1940.

These monumental stone pillars are among the incredible remains of the second century B.C. kingdom of Palmyra, Syria, an oasis and trade crossroads in the Syrian desert.
Roman forces sacked Palmyra in A.D. 273 after its powerful queen Zenobia challenged imperial rule. The city continued to be an important landmark after Roman conquest, hosting silk caravans from China, spice traders from India, and perfume merchants from Arabia.

Approximately 60 miles (100 kilometers) from Belize City, the almost perfectly circular Blue Hole is more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) across and some 400 feet (120 meters) deep. The hole is the opening to what was a dry cave system during the Ice Age. When the ice melted and the sea level rose, the caves were flooded, creating what is now a magnet for intrepid divers.
